Cluster Lead
The rich marine resources of Indonesia, coupled with the significant threats to their sustainability and the government’s Blue Economy initiatives, form a compelling backdrop for the EU-ASEAN HE Connectivity project. This aligns perfectly with IPB University’s motto: “Inspiring Innovation with Integrity in Agriculture, Ocean, and Biosciences for a Sustainable World.” IPB University is Indonesia’s leading university in marine sciences, with strong established academic and research collaborations in Indonesia and abroad and significant expertise in academic training for marine issues. It places a particular focus on the SDGs, reflected for example in the SDG Action Award it recently received from the Indonesian government for the third time in a row.

The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FFMS) at IPB University plays a pivotal role in this context. Its focus encompasses organizing higher education programs, conducting innovative research, and providing community service. These activities span various sectors including fisheries, coastal management, marine sciences, and small island development, all contributing to the sustainable Blue Economy and community welfare improvement.
FFMS is structured into five specialized departments: Department of Aquaculture/D-AQU (focuses on freshwater and marine aquaculture), Department of Aquatic Resources Management/D-ARM (specializes in aquatic conservation, sustainable fisheries management, and ecotourism), Department of Aquatic Products Technology/D-APT (concentrates on fisheries product processing technology), Department of Fisheries Resources Utilization/D-FRU (emphasizes sustainable capture fisheries, fishing gears, fishing vessels, and fishing ports), and Department of Marine Science and Technology/D-MST (focuses on exploration of marine resources and marine acoustics). Each department offers comprehensive educational programs at both undergraduate (BSc) and postgraduate (MSc, PhD) levels.
FFMS has a rich history of international collaboration, including: hosting a long-term DAAD lectureship program in marine science and fisheries since 1999; collaborations with UMT Malaysia for lecturer exchanges, student internships, and joint international conferences; partnerships with European institutions like ZMT Bremen and Oxford University for research projects and student exchanges; cooperation with US-AID on sustainable fisheries management in West Kalimantan; organization of a Master’s program on Small Island Management for students from various island nations, supported by UNDP. The postgraduate program of Coastal and Marine Resources Management has previously collaborated with Aarhus University (Denmark), Bremen University (Germany), Xiamen University (China), and Queensland University (Australia) in the field of postgraduate study, and in collaboration with UMT (Malaysia) has conducted a capture fisheries summer school in 2023 and 2024. The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FFMS) has furthermore collaborated with NTNU Norway in the field of curriculum development. These partnerships provide an ideal basis for the further dissemination of STABLE outputs.
